The Festival

Having traveled the world since 1980, Nyírség Folk Dance Ensemble invited two of their previous host groups in 1993 to Nyíregyháza: Belgium and Greece. The meeting was so successful that we decided to organize similar events in our city in the future.

That was the moment when the idea of Nyírség International Folk Dance Festival was born.

During the past two decades, at the festivals organized by Nyírség Dance Association supported by Nyíregyháza City with County Rights, more than 30 nations danced their special folk dances, played their folk music, sang their most beautiful folk songs, offered their specialities and showed their wonderful folk costumes to the public of our city and get acquainted with the values and beauty of Hungarian culture.

In the meantime, the festival gained CIOFF support as well.

Since 1996 the following nations have participated in Nyírség International Folk Dance Festival: Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, North Cyprus, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Turkey, Yugoslavia and the host Hungary.
